How to play the speed or spit card game
Spit, often called Speed, is a fast paced game in which the
aim is to get rid of the cards as quick as possible. The game is played with
two people and a full deck. Jokers are allowed and represent a wild card.
Older decks are recommended, since the game can get fierce and fast.
To start, the deck is shuffled and distributed as follows: Starting on the
left, five cards are placed in a pile facedown; two single cards are also
placed beside the first deck of five. A second deck of five cards is placed
face down on the right side. Proper placement should be 5—1—1—5. Remaining
cards are distributed evenly to both players.
When cards are dealt, each player takes five in hand and sets the other pile
close by. When players are ready, each turns the card on their right side
over. This pile is called the spit pile. Cards are placed down in the order
of their value, generally going up from Ace though King. Sometimes, going
both ways are accepted but it all depends on the players. Cards must be
placed down one at a time, and only using one hand. When one player gets
stuck, they must put their hand on the stack of five cards to the right—call
out “SPIT”, the other player acknowledges and turns his card as well.
In some instances, a new layout has to be dealt. This happens whenever one
of the players manages to get rid of all their cards or the play becomes
blocked when both players run out of spit cards, but both players till have
cards in their stockpiles. In either case, each player must choose a spit
pile to claim as his or her own. Generally players chose the pile that seems
to have the least amount of cards. Players then take the pile, shuffle and
redeal the cards. Play resumes when both say, “SPIT”.
When your stock of five cards in hand runs out, replace it, but keep no more
than 5 cards in hand at a time. When both run out, yell “SPIT” or “SPEED” to
signal the end of the game; you score one point for each card in your
opponent's hand and stockpile. The first player whose score reaches or
exceeds an agreed amount (for example 25 points) wins the game.
